Blockprint

Made 51 greeting cards for my annual holiday mailing this weekend. Printed them on two different colors of a hand-made paper, with this gray color being my favorite over a slightly darker blue. Used my antique Line-O-Scribe letterpress machine and had the entire edition printed and cleaned up in less than two hours. Thank you antique technology!

Pulled this proof Tuesday night and am very pleased with the result. Plan to pull a small edition of 20 in four stages. I will print the first five a lighter version of this blue and add more pigment as I print the four stages of color saturation. With a little luck I will hand-sewn a 3 or four print, square grid with color gadation going from darka t the top to light at the bottom. Has some potential...

Pulled this little plate as a demonstration for my students this week. It was wiped a little quickly and I pulled a ghost from the plate afterward. My plan is to work it a little more this week and pull a second proof next Tuesday and then make a series of color plates for a more complicated print. Last time I used the carborundum technique which was a little heavy handed for my taste. This time around I will try my diamond tip engraver to create a texture on the plexiglas to hold a thinner skim of colored ink.

Linoleum Block Print

I pulled proofs of this block yesterday. This will be my annual holiday card and I am looking forward to designing a color block for this one as well. After my last block, I recognized that my carving style over the year's had morphed into a whittling-style, using an x-acto knife and I was not really carving anymore.

The work became geometric in nature and reminded me of fractals, but it seemed to take a lot longer to make, so I decided to carve this little block with just my 'v' gouge knife and much to my surprise, it went a lot quicker. I think this will be my new technique for the near future.

2-plate linoleum block print

Printed four proofs of this pair of blocks I have been carving off and on all summer. The alignment of the blocks is as close to perfect as I could have hoped for and there is only a few little corrections to make. I have 26 sheets of paper ready to go for a small edition and plan to print two different background colors, both different from the gray-green I used in the proof prints. Four of the edition prints will be hand-sewn together as a group and stretched on a canvas.

Went for a walk along the old railroad tracks between Plainfield and Marshfield. There was some parts that were flooded and washed out after Hurricane Irene, but it was not that bad. Found this nice view from an old hay field looking towards Route 2. The sun was shining the day after the hurricane with wonderful clouds and a freshly hayed field.

Drypoint and Carborundum Prints

Finally finished a proof of this print and I am unsure if I like the combination of techniques. The drypoint was a struggle as was the alignment of four carborundum plates. There were a few 'lesser' proofs of all four colors left and this was the best of the batch that I pulled off my press last night. It is growing on me as the morning progresses...

So there I was, sitting on a rock on the shore of Lake Groton making a little sketch. Suddenly, a jet ski zooms by a little close and the waves splashed up onto me and ruined my sketching mojo. This drawing had a huge water stain from the running ink and I might have worked on it with more enthusiasm if not for this unfortunate encounter with a high-speed watercraft. Thank the gods for white-out.

The last few weeks I have taken my boys swimming in the river after work. I had noticed how the sun was shining on this tree across the river in an old cow field. It lit up the tree with this amazing golden light.

Last night I crossed the river and scrambled up the rough embankment and battled the Horseflies for about 20 minutes while I made this little sketch. Went home and worked on it for awhile longer and I think this one is a keeper...

Carborundum Print

Finally, I finished all four colored plates for my experimental print with the carborundum process. I have made a few errors, but when I pull the black and white key plate (Plexiglas dry point) over the colors, I should get a few nice impressions from the small run of twelve I made. Hopefully I will find the time to print the edition in a week or two.

When I originally made this sketch I did not like the sky, so I quickly drew a second version of the sky that reflected what was in front of me at that very moment. Made two copies and collaged it together. This is the better version of this drawing and I am much happier with the result.

Took the boys swimming on No. 10 Pond this past weekend. It was a beautiful end to my vacation.

The clouds in this sketch are particullarly successful and may be used down the road in something else. The use of line might lend itself nicely to a dry-point print.

2-plate blockprint

Finished a small edition of 28 prints and feel good about my final color choice. Fifteen of them will head to Oregon to a print exchange exhibition and I will frame one of them. I was thinking about my hanging scroll project and may try a new idea around sewing some of these prints together. Instead of creating a hanging scroll, I am thinking about sewing nine of them together in a grid and stretching them like a canvas. It dawned on me that I could then frame them like a painting. Might be the new direction I have been looking for.

Went out to view the amazing full moon this weekend and it did not disappoint. Walked behind the grange hall around 9 p.m. and stood in the deep snow for a few minutes. The total lack of clouds made it bright enough to see in the dark to draw.

There is something very peaceful about standing and observing the full moon. The light spreads across the snow-covered landscape and makes everything seem to glow.

Reduction print

I worked the wood grain on this block as a demonstration for my students and saw this strange little landscape in my mind. It reminded me of how I imagined Mordor as a child reading LOTR, as it felt like toxic mist rolling off of a barren landscape. The print is a little out of my comfort zone, but I really tried to listen to the block and use the wood grain to my advantage.

This print worked a little bit better without the electric blanket. We used an actual steamroller to print these plates. It was interesting, but it would have worked better with decent printmaking paper that was slightly damp. The acrylic ink used was also not ideal, but for someone who wanted to pull really big monotypes, this is an interesting idea.

Pulled this little proof that was inspired by an older monotype done a few years back, originally called "The Tree" (see post from October 2005). I have since worked the plate a little bit more and plan to scratch just a bit more before I print a second proof later this week. Once I have a solid proof pulled, I plan to make a second plate for the color using a new technique of mixing carborundum into acrylic medium and painting directly on the plexi plate. It should mimic the effect of a mezzotint, creating a tone on the plate. With a little luck I will have found a process that can help me create small color editions from my drypoint plates.

I wire brushed this block I cut from and old barn board. At first the print evoked a sunset on the ocean but as I contemplated the image I found in the wood grain it seemed like a seen from Mordor. I may try to create a slightly illustrative image from this print.

2 Monotypes

A couple of years back I made a series of prints exploring the duality of the landscape, but they were printed on separate pieces of paper. Over the years I have become increasingly interested in the process of making reversals of an image for printing and how it helps me to reflect on the yin and yang of the natural world. On one hand there is the pastoral beauty of the landscape that we all celebrate in one way of the other. Then there is the use and abuse that we as a society impose on the natural world. Printing the two separately made plates close together creates an eerie image that is somewhat disturbing and uncomfortable to look at. The fact that they are not exactly the same adds to this sense of mystery that I have been trying to evoke in my work for some time now.

I have been thinking about the color of the oil from the gulf I have seen in the news, but this color did not quite hit the mark. It needs to be a little more orange than this rose color I mixed. The photographer Ansel Adams once said he visualized his finished prints from the moment he set up his tripod in the field to the last moment in the darkroom. This is something that has taken years for me to make second nature. I love it when I have something in my head and can execute it in the most personal and self-satisfying way. I think I may title this new series of prints "Sick colors for a dying planet".

I pulled this one with a second plate with some blue ink that I buffed to just a trace of color. This is the direction I wish to take these drypoint prints in.

I was never sastisfied with the color(s) used in the original edition and decided to pull a small run of 12 using this light yellow-green tone. The original print run also had a letterpress poem under each print and wanted a pure edition without any text.

Climbed to the height of the land outside of my son's piano teachers house to discover a wealth of views. The snow was frozen and easy to walk on with a warm late winter sun.

Hopefully the weather will be nice for next weekend and another climb up the hill.

This cartoon for a block-print is a reversal of the sketch I did this past weekend. The image just took root in my mind and I have a vision of the 2nd block color having some clouds in the sky. It is hard to say as these things evolve a little as I carve the blocks.

This is a pretty good proof and I have carved some more on the block. I may carve a simple texture into the clouds before I print an edition this weekend. The color will be a little different. Here is is an Ultramarine blue with some bone black. I think it will be a slightly lighter blue blue for the final run.

The last couple of cartoons I have made for a blockprint carving seem to have moved on to a new level of sophistication. I cannot wait to start carving this one but it will have to wait as I am ready to start working on the D&L Beverage image. I am thinking about naming this image "Lonely Town" as it is fitting and a bit of a homage to S. Palmer's Lonely Tower.

There is nothing more difficult than to attempt to paint the setting sun. Then to make matters worse I attempted to paint it in black and white, so to speak with this brown ink. All in all my effort is not half bad except the humidity made the ink dry very slowly and the bugs almost drove me mad...

This drawing is ready to be transferred to a block for carving. I really enjoyed the way the image simplified itself and I have worked on this off and on for about a month. I put it down for a few weeks and almost gave up on the image. I stared at it for a few hours while on vacation and it almost finished itself as I decided to just be bold.

Took my students down to the river to paint and had a terrible allergic reaction. Had the worst skin rash in a decade but managed to power through another 2.5 hours of class. Did make this sketch and wrote a little poem about the experience of trying to draw and not scratch my arms off at the same time.
