Starlight Woodblock

Cherry Woodblock

5.5"x6.75"

The carving for this little block is going well and is a little different for me. I wanted the challenge of portraying a night scene and decided to fill the entire picture plane with marks. It will be interesting to see how it prints when it is finished.

It is cool to see the block itself instead of the print. Do you always use cherry wood for the blocks? Is a denser harder wood better or perhaps a softer more pliable wood?

Sometimes I use linoleum, but cherry is my favorite. It is just hard enough to hold the elements and does not split or run easily. I have tried a variety of wood besides cherry but it really is the best. P
