Full Moon

June 20, 2006

Monotype on buff paper

5"x7"

I did not ink this print properly as the copper plate has warped slightly and it is difficult to ink. This is a shame as I made this at the very end of my session and love what is happening with the dynamic movement in the clouds land and water. I think I will use to make a larger print when I work the big press in a few weeks.

Monotype
6"x9"
This print is not as satisfying as the first two but there are still some nice things going on. The energy of the marks is getting in the way a little bit and is a distraction.

Green River Reservoir II

Monotype

5"x7"

This print has a feel that is not unlike the woodcuts of William Blake. There is an Arcadian feel to the landscape that is at the root of what I want to achieve with my work.

Green River Reservoir I

Monotype

5"x7"

Besides being a nice little print I am continually surprised as I gain further control of the monotype medium. I now have the ability to create a variety of tones on a plate with ink that can create a rich and interesting landscape print.

Dark Sky, Black River

June 16, 2007

Monotype on buff paper

5"x7"

I don't like using this arches buff paper but it looks nice with the stark black ink. There are a lot of different textures used in this little print and I am glad I did not lighten the tone of the sky. It lends the scene an ominous tone that reflects my mood as the news on my radio tells me about more dead in Iraq and the government predicts it will only get worse as their plans for more troops is put into place. Why does this not make sense to me but my dark little print does? A subtle reflection of the world around me that may look calm in my corner of the world but is really in turmoil. It is hard to say...

Monotype

4.5"x5"

This past weekend I ran an Intro to the SPA Press in Barre at Studio Place Arts and had four great students. I always make one quick demonstration print and use this image from a dream I had almost twenty years ago.

Green River Reservoir Map

June 6,2007

Bic 4-Color Pen

5.5"x3.75"

I made my own copy of a map of the reservoir for a little artists book, to document the project. The proportions are far from perfect but I feel it could actually be used pretty well to navigate around the reservoir.

Final Proof

June 2, 2007
Chiaroscuro Print
5.25"x6.75"
This is the second of three proofs I pulled and it is starting to look nice. I sanded the bottom of the block a little more than it shows in this print and it should be perfect when I pull a small edition. The color is about how I want it so I think I have a green light to finish this one and move on to the next.

Misty Mountains

June 2, 2007

Ball-point Pen

3.5"x4.25"

This is the last of the sketches I made while camping at Greenwood Reservoir. I made one last trip around Big Island and this view is looking north from the eastern shore of the island. There was a light mist in the air and I have found that one of the best tools for sketching in wet weather is the ball-point pen.

Ball-point Pen
5.25"x3.5"

After the noon hour and a morning of paddling around the reservoir I decided to go for a hike. The clouds gathered and it was misting so I did not want to be out on the water. All in all I hiked about ten miles exploring a maze of back-woods dirt roads that are all over the Northeast Kingdom. After awhile I came close to civilization when I found this old farm. This field called to me and there is something special about this drawing that reminds me of Claude and the many landscape artists I have been studying over the last two years.

From Beaver Meadow

Charcoal Pencil

3.5"x5"

I spent the morning paddling around Greenwood Reservoir and this view is looking south from Beaver Meadow down a long thin inlet. The bugs just started to get bad as the fog lifted and the sun broke through the heavy cloud cover.

Greenwood Reservoir

Ball-point Pen
3.75"x 5.5"
This was the first of two evenings spent camping on the Greenwood Reservoir in Northern Vermont. The rain had just cleared enough that I could still make a sketch and the muted colors of blue, gray and green were amazing.
