Big Rock

August 26, 2012
Pencil on paper
5.5"x3.75"

Went down to the river near my house yesterday with the family and made this little thumbnail sketch.  I am really pleased with it and wrote down a few lines.  All in all a great final day of summer as my two boys are back in school.  Also spent a few hours tearing paper for my next print run and my back is sore from the effort...

Down by big rock,
Kids play downstream,
End of summer.

Yankee Block Cartoon

August 24, 2012
Copy, Technical Pen and White-out
9"x12"

Spent the last couple of days fiddling around with copies of my original drawing, tech pens and white-out and feel this is a good enough cartoon to transfer to a block of linoleum. The carving process always refines the actual print and I am already running color scheme ideas for the 2nd block through my head.

This view of VT Yankee is something I have wanted to make into a print for a very long time. Earlier this summer I went for a long drive down to the NH side of the Connecticut River and made a sketch of the power plant. It seemed odd to be walking along this beautiful VT river habitat with plenty of wildlife, but then bam. There is VT Yankee, a concrete cube plopped down in the middle of this pastoral setting. Seems like such a contradiction that most landscape artists would not even attempt.

The final 2-block edition is a ways off as it may take me some time to carve this into the linoleum, but the second color to go with the black key-block will be a nice radioactive green. Still may call the final product 'Tritium Leaks' but that could change.

Montpelier Smokestack

August 21, 2012
Pencil on Paper
4.25" x 5"

Went downtown at lunch today and made this quick sketch from behind the grocery story by the river.  It came out pretty well and I think tomorrow or Thursday I will go downstream and draw the same smokestack from a different vantage point.  Wrote down some words as well...

Montpelier smokestack,
Behind the Grand Union this August afternoon,
People and traffic.

Camp Sketch

August 3, 2012
Pencil on Paper
3"x4.25"

Made this quick sketch the first day at camp in Maine this past weekend.  The next day I a started a painting of this view with acrylics and had a great hour and a half of working in the sun.  I plan to finish the piece this week and hope to share it here soon.
