Father's Day

Sitting on the bank of a sunny river

the moon blessed the day

with cool summer water

rushing by with a low thunder.

Pleasing all the senses

in a most wondrous way.

River Sunset

June 14, 2006
Monotype on Copper
5"x7"

This image was done from my memory of a Ralph Albert Blakelock painting I had viewed at the Robert Hull Fleming Museum in Burlington, Vermont.

There is a bit of magic in this one and I was filled with a great sense of amazement when I lifted the paper off the press and viewed the image for the first time. For a brief moment I forgot the troubles of the world and was filled with the joy of creation.

River Sunset (ghost)

Monotype on Copper

There was enough ink on the plate to pull a decent ghost off of this one. Both the original and the ghost have really nice things happening.

Solarplate Etching
4.25"x5.75"

This is the second attempt to burn this plate as the first version had a line from the copier running across the middle of the plate. This one etched beautifully and I used brown ink for a small run of six proofs.

Plastic Factory State I

May 12, 2006

Oak Woodblock

5"x7"

For a first pull of the plate this came out pretty well. I need to do a little more carving in the bare trees and the shapes of water in the lower half of the image. Pull another proof and then prep the color block! I pulled a small edition of six proofs of this one.

Oak Woodblock

10"x7"

I pulled two proofs with multiple impressions off the plate and think I should repeat this image when I pull a color chiaroscuro print from this block sometime next month.

Plastic Factory Woodblock II

June 12, 2006

Oak Woodblock

5"x7"

Here is the first state of the Ray Plastic Factory woodblock. The plate printed nicely but will need some more carving before I am ready to start a color block. A furniture maker friend of mine told me that the plate is a piece of oak, a wood that I have never carved before. Cherry is till the best as the straight oak grain splinters in an odd way. The even and strong grain of the cherry tree is still the best surface for carving and printing.

Barr Hill II

Charcoal Pencil on Paper

Wispy clouds move right to left

behind the dark pines.

Bright May sun on the birches

makes them glow an unnatural green

that bristles in the warm breeze.

Gull cries softly

in rhythm with the tide.

Orange orb drops quickly

behind a purple horizon.

The view from Kippy's Take-Out
was better than a fogged-in hike
along the rugged Maine coast.
No views, but a Bald Eagle
broke through the fog and mist.

No. 3 Litho Crayon on Paper

4.25"x6"

Fog rolls in with the tide

Ocean, sky and horizon

Blend into one with the trees.

Old Apple Tree

May 24, 2006
Monotype
8"x10"

This print seems to reflect the mood I was in after a long day at work. I was agitated in general and a little tired but still managed to salvage the evening as there are some interesting things happening with this one.

Woodbury Mountain

Monotype

5"x7"

This little view came out kind of impressionistic and has a nice sense of atmosphere. I still seem to be having some problems depicting bare trees but it is still not a bad little print.
