Long Shadows

October 27, 2011
Copy, Sharpie and White-out
7"x5"

Finished this cartoon for my next 2-block carving.  My style is shifting slightly, but staying basically the same.  Evolving and maturing a little bit as i think about my process and physical ability to carve detailed blocks as I near 50.  Here is a poem that may accompany this with some letterpress.

Cow-field scramble,
Shadows creep across the grass,
Late summer magic.

Tunk Mountain (color proof)

October 25, 2011
Drypoint and Monotype
4"x6"

Pulled another proof as a demonstration for my students last night.  The registration is off a little but it was a nice way to introduce my class to multiple plate prints.  Many of them had great success last night and a great time was had by all.

Tunk Mountain Drypoint

October 18, 2011
Plexiglas Drypoint
4"x6"

Pulled this little plate as a demonstration for my students this week.  It was wiped a little quickly and I pulled a ghost from the plate afterward.  My plan is to work it a little more this week and pull a second proof next Tuesday and then make a series of color plates for a more complicated print.  Last time I used the carborundum technique which was a little heavy handed for my taste.  This time around I will try my diamond tip engraver to create a texture on the plexiglas to hold a thinner skim of colored ink.

Color Cartoon

October 8, 2011
Copy, sharpie and hi-lighter
5"x3"

Here is the color cartoon for the little print I am in the process of carving.  I plan to have it carved and pull the color proof in time to pull the key block over the proof as a demo for my students in four weeks.

December Morning

October 5, 2011
Linoleum Block Print
3"x5"

I pulled proofs of this block yesterday.  This will be my annual holiday card and I am looking forward to designing a color block for this one as well.  After my last block, I recognized that my carving style over the year's had morphed into a whittling-style, using an x-acto knife and I was not really carving anymore.

The work became geometric in nature and reminded me of fractals, but it seemed to take a lot longer to make, so I decided to carve this little block with just my 'v' gouge knife and much to my surprise, it went a lot quicker.  I think this will be my new technique for the near future.
